Chapter 9
Elisa never tired of looking at the defeated monster, lying there with his eyes closed. His face looked quite peaceful now, and what the others thought was ugly was simply fascinating to her in all its wildness.
The tears trickled down her rosy cheeks. âThat poor, poor boy. What have they done to him?â she sobbed.
âBoy?â Niklas said. âWhat a way to describe him!â
âI was thinking of when he was little,â she sobbed. âHe canât be all that old.â
Villemo lifted the torch higher. âNo, he seems ageless, without any age,â she said pensively. âI think youâre right. He is probably young rather than old.â
âYes, thatâs true,â Dominic said.
Niklas didnât have the time to discuss the Beastâs age. He was busy cleaning the wound before the monster woke up.
Elisa stroked the thin cheek. âHe must be ever so lonely.â
âThatâs probably something he brought on himself,â Dominic said.
âYes and no,â Villemo said. âHe was probably no angel when he was very young â and they were probably not nice to him simply because he was like that, so his defiance and hatred of other people has simply grown.â
âProbably,â Niklas said.
Elisa sat on her heels, gazing at her new hero. That is to say, apart from the entire race of the Ice People, she had never had a hero before.
She had always felt that she belonged to them somehow and that her kin were inextricably linked with the Ice People. She knew her family history in minute detail. She had often heard her parents speak about it with pride.
Her kinsfolk had been at Graastensholm for almost as long as the Ice People. Her great-grandfather, Klaus, had arrived there as a boy a hundred years ago. Sol, the witch, had lived with him for a while and had once saved his life. She took him with her to Linden Avenue. There he married Rosa, but not before he was the very reason why Dominicâs and Niklasâs great-grandfather, Are, married their great-grandmother, Meta. Elisaâs grandfather, Jesper, had been Brandâs best friend and they had fought together in a war. Jesper in turn was the reason why Mattias of Graastensholm married Hilde, or he certainly played a part in that marriage. Grandpa Jesper had waited so many years to get married that he almost skipped a whole generation. When he did finally marry, it was at the request of the Ice People. Elisaâs parents, Lars and Marit, had been present every time something special happened among the Ice People, and now here she was on this fantastic journey herself!
With this background in mind, didnât it then make sense that she, of all people, would think of what was best for this descendant of the Ice People? He was ostracized, lonely and unhappy. Elisa was certain that he wasnât evil, just unhappy, and she would serve him and be his friend just as her kin had served the Ice People and been their most loyal friends.
She was thinking of all these things as they were attending to the Beastâs foot.
